Rainwater Harvesting

The concept of recovering rainwater is quite simple; collect rainwater from your roof, store it on site, filter and re-use in place of mains water.

By installing a rainwater harvesting system, you reduce the amount of water you consume from the mains water supply, which in turn reduces your water bill and reduces the environmental impact of supplying fresh water.

Modern methods of recycling rainwater utilise a technology which evolved following years of experience in countries such as Germany, New Zealand and Australia.

Rainwater is a valuable resource that plays an essential role in sustainable development. There is an increasing acknowledgement of the benefits from harvesting rainwater, resulting in its inclusion becoming standard in new-build design within the UK.

There are a number of applications for using recycled rainwater, including:

WC and urinal flushing
Irrigation and landscape watering
Vehicle washing
Swimming pools
Domestic and commercial laundry
Cooling and sprinkler systems

What sort of buildings can accommodate rainwater harvesting?

Harvested rainwater is first collected from the roof of a building, so if it has a roof any building can be used!

Which system will I need?

Each system is individually tailored to meet the client’s site-specific requirements.

The factors that we use include:

  • The square measurement of your roof area, taken in metres

  • Local rainfall – based on the last 40 years of MET Office figures

  • The anticipated demand for water depending on application

  • Occupancy levels based on the number of people who will use the recycled water

  • Any existing specification or site-specific requirements

  • Filter co-efficient

  • Client’s budget

There are three main types of system available:

  • Non-pressurised systems for applications fed by gravity

  • Pressurised systems for applications fed via direct pressure

  • Domestic systems fed to washing machines, toilets and outside uses.
